In December, 1995, Joanna D. Hoffman purchased a franchise of General Business Services. At the time, GBS (the franchisor) was owned by The Dwyer Group, based in Waco, Texas. General Business Services was a provider of tax and business counseling services to small businesses and professionals. Its sister franchise (also owned by the Dwyer Group), E.K. Williams & Company, specialized in write up, payroll and tax services for the petroleum industry but also provided those services for other small businesses. At the time of her purchase, the combined GBS and EKW franchises approximated 250 offices in the U.S.
Ms. Hoffman began operations in Rocky Mount, NC as a sole proprietor in February, 1996 after a 13 year financial management career, most recently as Plant Controller with Allied-Signal, Inc. This new phase began the realization of a life long dream to become a business owner. The franchise path was chosen in order to gain access to a proven system and way of doing business, national brand recognition and marketing as well as a network of resources to assist with business development and client services.
In January, 1998, Ms. Hoffman incorporated in North Carolina as J.D. Hoffman & Associates, Inc. In July, 1998, Ms. Hoffman relocated her operation to Raleigh, NC for personal reasons and to expand her market base. About that same time, the franchise network of GBS and EKW was sold to Century Business Services, who had earlier acquired the franchise business Comprehensive Business Services. This expansion doubled the size of the franchise network. Comprehensive specialized in write up, payroll and tax services for small businesses.
In January, 1999, J.D. Hoffman & Associates, Inc adopted the new franchise brand name of Century Small Business Solutions. Simultaneously, the focus of the business began to change from business counseling and taxes (the GBS model) to write-up, payroll preparation, and tax return preparation (the Comprehensive model, as had been adopted by the Century franchisor).
In the spring of 2000, the Century Small Business Solutions franchise network was purchased by Fiducial, Inc., a France-based service provider of tax, financial and business services to small businesses, entrepreneurs, and professionals. Earlier, Fiducial had established operations in the U.S. through its acquisition of Triple Check, a franchised service provider of tax and financial services to individuals.
In March, 2006, J.D. Hoffman & Associates, Inc. bought out the remainder of the franchise agreement with Fiducial and changed its DBA to Carolina Accounting & Tax Solutions.
In September, 2009, the company relocated to its new office on Barrett Drive, now owned by Ms. Hoffman and her husband.
